The Airport’s vision for the future (2020-2050) is to:-

Double passenger movements from its current capacity of 18 million passengers per annum (mmpa) to 36-38 million passengers per annum.

This means increasing aircraft movements from 135,000 to 240,000 per annum.

Just over 16m passengers used the Airport last year.

They produced four different Expansion options which they shared with the public last year.

They have now decided on a preferred Option which involves a new second terminal and other facilities on land outside of the current airport boundary. This expansion involves building on Wigmore Valley Park which contains a County Wildlife Site and is one of the Luton’s major parks and wildlife areas. Luton Council (who own the Airport) declared the Park an Asset of Community Value this year.

Whilst the Airport Expansion will provide economic benefits to the area, there will also be huge Environmental Impacts and all at a time when there are major question marks over how to slow down climate change by reducing rather than increasing flights and aircraft emissions.
