Objection to the proposed demolition of "landmark" building The Bury, Kempston

Thursday, 20 March 2014 14:16

CPRE Bedfordshire has objected strongly to the proposed demolition of one of Kempton's historic buildings, mentioned as a "landmark" building in Bedford Borough's Plan for the new “West of Kempston” development area.

If this application goes ahead The Bury will be demolished and replaced with a 3 storey block of 24 apartments and 30 houses.

CPRE Bedfordshire is dismayed to learn that Planning Consultants acting on behalf of a developer have been in secret talks with Bedford Borough Council for the last 3 years regarding the demolition and development of The Bury House on the new housing development off Cemetery Road to the west of Kempston. Local residents were given just 14 days to respond to the recent application.

If approved, we believe this will be an example of poor planning process at Bedford Borough Council, where the views of local communities lose out to those of developers who stand to profit.

The Bury House and the gardens surrounded by the Grade 2 listed 17th Century wall has not been allocated for development and so should not be built on.

CPRE Bedfordshire recognises the need for new homes and supports Bedford Borough’s Local Plan which has allocated land for approx 12,500 new houses. We are totally opposed to the development of land outside the allocated areas.
